There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Memorial Day Grilling Tips for Those in Bainbridge

As we approach Memorial Day weekend, I would like to remind everyone of a few grilling safety tips.

  • Only use Propane and Gas Grills Outdoors
  • Place grill away from your deck, house, garage, overhangs, and deck rails.
  • Children and pets should be at least 3 feet away from the gilling area.
  • Remove any grease or fat that may be in trays below cooking surface.
  • Open gas grill lids prior to lighting
  • Check all hoses (apply soap and water to the hose and look for bubbles)
  • If you smell gas while cooking move away from the grill and call the fire department.
  • If using a charcoal grill, never add fluid while there is a flame.
  • Let coals completely cool before disposing of coals. (Only place in a metal container that is away from all flammable objects.)

We are in the height of summer and in Geauga County fire pits have become a great way to enjoy the outdoors and relax with your friends and family.

They are also a relatively inexpensive way to enhance your outdoor space and come in a variety of types and range from elaborate to quite simple. If you are lucky enough to have a fire pit, we would like to share with the following tips our local Fire Department posted to keep in mind when it comes time to use your fire pit:

  • The fire pit or approved container must be at least 15 feet away from any structure or combustible surface that can catch fire. This minimal distance is per national, state and local fire code requirements for open burning in approved containers.
  • Avoid windy conditions that can blow hot embers onto combustible surfaces. It’s possible that conditions in Ohio could prompt burn bans depending on dry weather conditions.
  • Remove leaves and other combustible materials around the pit to ensure the fire doesn’t accidentally spread.
  • Always have a container of water nearby and a garden hose on standby before starting the fire.
  • Do not use lighter fluid, kerosene or gasoline to start a fire because of the risks of severe burn injuries. Instead, place a crumpled piece of paper or cardboard or a store-bought fire starter and cover with kindling. 
  • Keep children and pets a minimum of three feet from the open burn.
  • Extinguish a fire by spreading the ashes over a large surface area to cool. Then, pour water over them to make sure they are completely extinguished ashes can re-ignite.
  • If you have a fire that escapes your fire pit and moves into a nearby pile of kindling or a combustible surface, call 9-1-1 immediately.
  • Check your home insurance policy to ensure that you’re properly covered when using an approved outdoor fire container.
  • Permanent outdoor fireplaces can present zoning issues if there are existing deed restrictions and/or property set back requirements which restrict any type of structure constructed.
  • Keep in mind that outdoor fire containers can produce smoke pollutants, which can be a health hazard to you and your neighbors. They can also produce smoke scares during night- time hours, if the source of the smoke is not readily apparent. These calls are treated as potential fires, committing firefighters and equipment until the source of the smoke is identified.

In just a few days, most of us will be enjoying Fourth of July festivities and fireworks. Firefighters want you to remember how easily they can cause house fires or wildfires. One of their biggest reminders - don't use any fireworks anywhere where the landscape is extremely dry.  Here are some additional safety reminders:

  • Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit—hot enough to melt some metals.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy, in case of fire or other mishap. 
  • Light fireworks one at a time, then move quickly away from the fireworks device. 
  • Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them with water and throw them away.
  • Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Move to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
  • Never point or throw fireworks (including sparklers) at anyone.
  • After fireworks complete their burning, to prevent a trash fire, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding the device.
  • Make sure fireworks are legal in your area, and only purchase and set off fireworks that are labeled for consumer (not professional) use.
  • Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Spontaneous combustion - Fact or Fiction?

Spontaneous combustion or spontaneous ignition, as it is often called, is the occurrence of fire without the application of an external heat source.

Due to chemical, biological, or physical processes, combustible materials self-heat to a temperature high enough for ignition to occur

Rags and towels soaked with oils, including cooking oils; hot laundry left in piles; large compost, mulch, manure, and leaf piles; and moist baled hay can spontaneously combust in the right conditions. Avoid this type of fire by following a few simple and proven tips:

  • Store piles of hay, compost, mulch, manure, and leaves away from buildings, in case a fire occurs, and keep the piles small to allow for the circulation of air and the dissipation of heat.
  • Any business using large quantities of oily rags should dispose of those rags in an OSHA-approved container to await pickup by an industrial cleaning company.
  • If you're working on a project at home, spread the soiled rags in a single layer on concrete to prevent the buildup of heat and allow the rags to become hard and brittle. Place the rags out of direct sunlight and secure the corners to prevent movement by wind.
  • Hay should be completely dry before baling and moving to a storage facility. Ensure that the facility is well ventilated.
  • Dial 911 or your local fire emergency number if your hay bales or mulch, leaf, manure, or compost pile is emitting smoke. The combustible material will need to be spread out to dissipate the rising heat, but the introduction of oxygen can result in an immediate fire. Firefighters should be standing by onsite.

Annually, U.S. fire departments respond to an average of 10,200 home fires each year involving grills, hibachis, or barbecues. With it being Memorial Day this weekend, SERVPRO of Geauga County urges homeowners to check the readiness of their outdoor cooking equipment – like grills and propane tanks – to help ensure summer cooking fires don’t become house fires.

General Grill Safety

  1. Check your grill for cleanliness and damage. Remove grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill before the first use and after each subsequent use.
  2. Position your grill well away from your home and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging tree branches
  3. Keep children and pets at a safe distance – at least three feet from the grill
  4. Never leave the grill unattended when in use, and always grill outside.

Thankfully everyone was ok, but it is imperative to take the time to share with everyone these useful tips on Fire Prevention:

The U.S. Fire Administration reports that cooking, followed by heating, are the top two leading causes of home fires. You can help prevent fire damage by:

  • Installing smoke alarms on every level of your home and outside bedrooms.
  • Staying in the kitchen when cooking, or by the grill when grilling.
  • Turning oven burners off and making sure the stove area is clear of other materials.
  • Keeping anything that can burn at least three feet away from fireplaces, heaters, etc.
  • Unplug or turn heaters off when you’re not in the room.
  • Have heating systems and chimneys inspected regularly.

After a Fire - Use Caution

  • While waiting for help to arrive, safety is key:  Assess whether it’s safe to stay in the house.
  • Look out for electrical and “slip and fall” hazards.
  • Only attempt activities that are safe for you to perform.
  • Wet materials can be VERY heavy. Be careful!
  • If safe to enter, and weather permits; open windows and doors to “air out” structure and reduce smoke odors.

Fire Safety in Geauga County

This past week was Fire Prevention Week, which is a great reminder to educate yourself and to make sure you know what to do in the unfortunate event of a fire. 

First and foremost, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are a necessity.  Be sure to TEST your devices MONTHLY, CHANGE them YEARLY and REPLACE them every 10 YEARS.  It is important to know that smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors are two very different devices and should both be in your home.  Fire alarms detect smoke while carbon monoxide detectors detect carbon monoxide, a harmful gas that can cause health effects.  You can purchase dual detectors that pick up the presence of both smoke and carbon monoxide but having individual detectors is best and most reliable.  

This week I had the opportunity to visit a few local firehouses in my community.  Thank you for all you do and if we can help bring awareness to the community including providing fire safety tips and provide educational resources, we are happy to do so!

More than 19,500 reported fires are started by fireworks every year.

Burns account for 44% of the 9,100 injuries treated in emergency rooms seen in the month around July 4th.

Half of the fireworks injuries seen at emergency rooms were extremities: hand, finger, or leg. One-third were to the eye or other parts of the head.

Children ages 10–14 had the highest rate of fireworks injury, with more than one-third (36%) of the victims of fireworks injuries under age 15.

Sparklers account for roughly one-quarter of emergency room fireworks injuries.

1,900 structure fires, 500 vehicle fires, and 17,100 outside and other fires

$105 million in direct property damage.

Cigarette Fires Are Preventable!

Most home fires occur in the kitchen while cooking and are the leading cause of injuries from fire. Another cause of fires at night are carelessly discarded cigarettes. These fires can be particularly dangerous because they may smolder for a long period before being discovered by sleeping residents.

Cigarette fires are preventable! The following are simple steps that each of us can take to prevent a tragedy.

Smoking

  • If you smoke, smoke outside. Most home fires caused by smoking materials start inside the home. Put your cigarettes out in a can filled with sand.
  • Make sure cigarettes and ashes are out. The cigarette really needs to be completely stubbed out in an ashtray or can with sand. Soak cigarette butts and ashes in water before throwing them away. Never toss hot cigarette butts or ashes in the trash can.
  • Check for cigarette butts. Chairs and sofas catch on fire fast and burn fast. Don't put ashtrays on them. If people have been smoking in the home, check for cigarettes under cushions.
  • Never smoke in a home where oxygen is used, even if it is turned off. Oxygen can be explosive and makes fire burn hotter and faster.
  • Be alert - don’t smoke in bed! If you are sleepy, have been drinking, or have taken medicine that makes you drowsy, put your cigarette out first.

Chimney Fire Prevention in Geauga County

Fire Protection Week in Geauga County

National Fire Protection week this year, is October 4th through the 10th. Fire Prevention Week started as a result of the October 8th, 1871 Great Chicago Fire in which over 250 people were killed, 100,000 people were left homeless, and it destroyed more than 2000 acres of land including over 17000 building structures. The NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) takes this week to educate children, adults, and teachers the importance of fire safety. This years focus is on safety in the kitchen. According to NFPA, cooking is the #1 cause of fires in a home. They found unattended cooking to be the leading cause of kitchen fires. Burns from scalding liquid are #2 of all burn injuries. NFPA has many tips on staying safe including:

1. Staying in the kitchen while you are cooking

2. Keeping anything that can catch on fire clear from the cooking area.

3. Use a timer

4. Keep handles away from the edge of a stove and countertop

5. Open Microwaved products and oven doors slowly and away from your face.

Preparing Your Family

What To Do After A Fire

Devastating house fire in Bedford Hts, Ohio Fortunately, this Bedford Hts., homeowner was able to make it out with minor injuries and is under the care of his wonderful daughters!
