Flooding in Geauga County

9/13/2023 (Permalink)

The majority of flood damage in the United States is the product of simple failures, such as those from pipe breaks or supply line breaks. This means that many flood damage losses in the United States are completely preventable. The problem is that too many property owners do not recognize the severity of damages caused by water. Any time a property owner notices water in their home or water in their business, it is imperative to call in a professional restoration company to immediately begin taking measures towards the restoration of the flooded home or business and the mitigation of water damage. With timely restoration and mitigation efforts, almost all flood damage is completely reversible. But even after the first 24 hours after water in a business or water in a home appears, the chances of a successful restoration or mitigation of the water damage begin to drop. After one week without property intervention in the flooded home or business, the chances of the property incurring massive, permanent water damage is all but assured. In the worst cases, this often involves the total write-off of the property. But with timely action, the restoration company can almost ensure the water cleanup will be a success. It's important to remember that the single most important step in successfully saving and restoring a flooded home or business is for the property owner to call in a professional restoration company.

Once the call to the water cleanup company is made, the team should arrive on site within a few minutes. Once there, they will immediately begin surveying the extent and severity of the water in the business or water in the home. They will go to the source of the pipe break or supply line break, cutting off any active leaks and seeing the extent of possible seepage. Using sophisticated tools, such as hygrometers and infrared detectors, the team will carefully inspect the area around the original supply line break or pipe break, getting a feel for the extent to which water may have seeped into out-of-site places.

The next step will be to begin the removal of any standing water in the home or water in the business. This will be carried out using heavy-duty vacuum equipment that can remove thousands of gallons of standing water each hour. The water removal portion of the cleanup process generally only takes a few minutes to an hour.

Next, the team will begin drying the premises. They will take extra care to ensure that all moisture is removed from the area of the original supply line break or pipe break. The drying step may take the longest of any of them.
Afterwards, all furniture and surfaces will be scrubbed to ensure no mildew is allowed to form. Finally, they will clean, sanitize, and disinfect. Lastly, they will ensure drying goals have been met and remove any equipment.

Commercial Flooding in Chardon, Ohio

8/22/2023 (Permalink)

After torrential floods rage through Chardon, OH, and your commercial property, you may be facing considerable repair costs. From draining away dirty water to content cleaning, expenses can mount quickly. However, a flood damage and cleanup service can perform a variety of jobs and offer you options that may save you money and allow you to reopen your business sooner than projected.

1. A Multitude of Services

Flooding can cause serious damage to a building, from ruining its roof to soaking carpeting. Hiring contractors and flooring experts separately can be costly and take weeks. However, a storm damage service may be able to perform a variety of tasks, from draining away black water to tearing out damaged drywall to providing mitigation for a damaged roof, saving you time and money.

2. Restoration vs. Replacement

The cost of replacing items after flooding can be considerable. However, a company that offers restoration services may be able to defray this expense by salvaging and cleaning your office furniture, important documents, and inventory. Dry, foam and abrasive content cleaning processes can be applied to different materials to ensure they are restored to a like-new condition. You may want to make a list of what you would like restored so your technicians can advise you about the cleaning of each item.

3. Swift Mitigation

Standing water and other damage caused by flooding can cause problems that have far-reaching effects on your commercial building. However, having a storm damage and cleanup company on hand can provide you with quick mitigation services that might reduce repair costs. These often include sealing off areas affected by flooding, isolating mold patches to prevent the spread of spores and using portable sump pumps to drain water away from areas that contain sensitive equipment.

Flooding can cause costly damage to your Chardon, OH, business. However, retaining a service to assist you with mitigation, repairs and content cleaning after a water emergency can save you money and make the process of restoration easier.

Handling a Flooded Property Correctly

Flood damage is one of the worst things that can befall a property. Many people incorrectly assume that because they don't live in a flood plain or an area prone to extreme weather that they are safe from the risk of flooding. This is not helped by news media coverage of major flooding events, which can often lend a sense of disproportion to the frequency of spectacular flooding of the type caused by hurricanes or overflowing rivers.

The truth is that the majority of flood damage in the United States is the product of far more mundane failures, such as those from pipe breaks or supply line breaks. In fact, the majority of flood damage caused in the U.S. is, therefore, subject to compete restoration and mitigation. This means that the majority of flood damage losses in the United States are completely preventable.

The problem is that too many property owners do not recognize the severity of water damage situation in time. Any time a property owner notices water in their home or water in their business, it is imperative to call in a professional restoration company to immediately begin taking measures towards the restoration of the flooded home or business and the mitigation of water damage. With timely restoration and mitigation efforts, almost all flood damage is completely reversible. But even after the first 24 hours after water in a business or water in a home appears, the chances of a successful restoration or mitigation of the water damage begin to drop precipitously. After one week without property intervention in the flooded home or business, the chances of the property incurring massive, water damage is all but assured.

What is a Lake Effect Snow?

11/16/2022 (Permalink)

snow storm Lake-effect snowfall is a fact of life in Geauga County

Lake effect snow is common across the Great Lakes region during the late fall and winter. Lake Effect snow occurs when cold air, often originating from Canada, moves across the open waters of the Great Lakes. As the cold air passes over the unfrozen and relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes, warmth and moisture are transferred into the lowest portion of the atmosphere. The air rises, clouds form and grow into narrow band that produces 2 to 3 inches of snow per hour or more.

Unfortunately, lake-effect snowfall is a fact of life in Geauga County. Scientists expect extreme winter storms to become more frequent and more intense in the area over the next few decades as our climate changes.

SERVPRO of Geauga County has a storm team ready to respond when this lake effect snow hits.  Our teams have experience and knowledge when you are dealing with storm, flood, and water damage. Why does my basement flood during heavy rain?

9/13/2022 (Permalink)

Flooded basement This flooded basement was a result of clogged gutters.

Persistent rain causes soil saturation, creating  water pressure. This pressure forces moisture through your basement walls and floor. Loose soil around your foundation absorbs water. Your gutters and downspouts get clogged with rainwater that pools right next to your foundation.

There are some measures you can take today to help waterproof your basement and safeguard it against a catastrophic flooding episode.

  • Keep your rain gutters clean, and make sure they’re pointed away from the foundation of your home.
  • During the next heavy rain, check around your yard to see where water is pooling and being diverted to. If it’s going toward the foundation of your home, contact an expert to grade your yard so it’s able to properly handle the water it receives during storms.
  • If you have a basement window, make sure it’s protected with a window well cover.
  • A sump pump can be your basement’s savior. An automatic sump pump set to trigger on when it senses water in your basement space offers a layer of protection for your home, even when you’re not there. Homeowners in particularly flood-prone areas should have a backup sump pump, and check to see if flood insurance is available for purchase.

Be sure to call SERVPRO of Geauga County if the amount of water is more than a foot deep, many items have become wet, or mildew is beginning to take hold. Quickly removing the water and beginning the drying process is essential to lessen the possibility for mold to form, which can greatly increase the damage and cost involved.

DID YOU HEAR THAT THUNDER LAST NIGHT?!

8/21/2022 (Permalink)

lightening We always recommend having a lightning safety plan!

Geauga County can always count on having unpredictable weather!

Thunderstorms are dangerous weather systems that include lightning and can also produce power winds of more than 50 mph, create hail, and can cause flash flooding and tornadoes.

Lightning is one of the leading causes of injury and death from weather-related hazards. Although most lightning victims survive, people struck by lightning often report a variety of long-term, debilitating symptoms.

You can protect yourself from severe thunderstorms even if you’re caught outdoors when lightning is close by. We always recommend having a lightning safety plan.

  • If the weather forecast calls for thunderstorms, postpone your trip or activity.
  • Don’t forget the 30-30 rule. After seeing lightning, start counting to 30. If you hear thunder before you reach 30, go indoors. Suspend activities for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder.
  • If no shelter is available, crouch low, with as little of your body touching the ground as possible. Lightning causes electric currents along the top of the ground that can be deadly up to, and exceeding, 100 feet away.
  • Avoid concrete floors and walls. Lightning can travel through any metal wires or bars in concrete walls or flooring.
  • If a thunderstorm warning has been issued for your area or you hear thunder, go inside immediately.
  • Get out and away from bodies of water. If boating, fishing or swimming, get to land and find a sturdy, grounded shelter or vehicle immediately.
  • And don’t forget your pets!! Outside dog houses are not lightning-safe. Dogs that are chained to trees or wire runners can easily fall victim to lightning strikes.  Bring your pets inside the home or garage during thunderstorms.

REMEMBER - When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors! - A sturdy building is the safest place to be during a thunderstorm.

What to do Before, During & After Thunderstorms

4/4/2022 (Permalink)

lightening over ohio farm Stormy weather in Geauga County

All storms are dangerous and thunderstorms are no exception. In the Geauga County area we tend to get a mix of heavy rain and thunderstorms in April and May. Below are great tips to help prepare you for what to do before, during and after a thunderstorm.

To prepare for a thunderstorm, you should do the following:

  • To begin preparing, you should an emergency kit and make a family communication plan.
  • Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
  • Postpone outdoor activities.
  • Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
  • Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
  • Remember, rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
  • Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.
  • Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.

What to do during a thunderstorm:

  • If thunderstorm and lightning are occurring in your area, you should:
  • Use a battery-operated weather radio for updates from local officials.
  • Avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords. Unplug appliances and other electrical items such as computers and turn off air conditioners. Power surges from lightning can cause serious damage.
  • Avoid contact with plumbing. Do not wash your hands, do not take a shower, do not wash dishes, and do not do laundry. Plumbing and bathroom fixtures can conduct electricity.
  • Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches, patios and decks.
  • Do not lie on concrete floors and do not lean against concrete walls.
  • Avoid natural lightning rods such as a tall, isolated tree in an open area.
  • Take shelter in a sturdy building. Avoid isolated sheds or other small structures in open areas.
  • Avoid contact with anything metal—tractors, farm equipment, motorcycles, golf carts, golf clubs, and bicycles.
  • If you are driving, try to safely exit the roadway and park. Stay in the vehicle and turn on the emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends. Avoid touching metal or other surfaces that conduct electricity in and outside the vehicle.
  • Help people who may require special assistance, such as infants, children and the elderly or those with access or functional needs.
  • Stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately.
  • Watch your animals closely. Keep them under your direct control.

What to do after a thunderstorm:

  • If lightning strikes you or someone you know, call 9-1-1 for medical assistance as soon as possible.
  • Never drive through a flooded roadway. Turn around or wait till water subsides.
  • Stay away from storm-damaged areas to keep from putting yourself at risk from the effects of severe thunderstorms.
  • Continue to listen to local radio and television stations for updated information or instructions, as access to roads or some parts of the community may be blocked.

11/12/2021 (Permalink)

snow in geauga county Be prepared for wintery months ahead.

According to the Farmers’ Almanac this winter calls for snow in Northeastern Ohio, but probably not as much as a snow-sport enthusiast might dream of. On average, we anticipate seeing see near-normal amounts of the white stuff from coast to coast. However, by mid-January much of the Geauga County region will trend toward colder conditions with an active storm track leading to a stretch of precipitation in rain, snow, sleet and ice.

What does this mean for you as commercial business owner?  In the winter months, building managers can be faced with costly damages and interrupted business caused by ice dams, frozen pipes, collapsed roofs, and faulty or unattended heating equipment. The most common types of restoration services resulting from these hazards include water damage mitigation, roofing repairs, and fire damage restoration.

SERVPRO of Geauga County specializes in storm and flood damage restoration.  Our crews are highly trained, and we use specialized equipment to restore your property to its pre-storm condition.

Since we are locally owned and operated, we are able to respond quicker with the right resources, which is extremely important. Geauga County Are You Perpared?

9/14/2021 (Permalink)

September is National Preparedness Month. This program is designed to bring awareness to the community and the importance of preparing for disaster. According to Ready.Gov, https://www.ready.gov/september this year’s theme is “Prepare to Protect. Preparing for disasters is protecting everyone you love.”

This year’s theme resonates with me more than ever, as I was recently in Tennessee during the floods. I was visiting my brother approximately 15 miles north of Waverly when the rain began. My brother had a friend over who abruptly had to leave. He told us he had to go grab his flat bottom boat, first aid kits, a few buddies, and life jackets. He is a volunteer fireman who was on a mission to rescue and save as many as they could. He had a plan; he was prepared to protect and serve not only the ones he loved but his community as well.

Each week there is a theme that focuses on different aspects of preparedness. (Information directly from: https://www.ready.gov/september)

Week 1 September 1-4: Make A Plan

Talk to your friends and family about how you will communicate before, during, and after a disaster. Make sure to update your plan based on the Centers for Disease Control recommendations due to the Coronavirus.

Week 2 September 5-11: Build A Kit

Gather supplies that will last for several days after a disaster for everyone living in your home. Don’t forget to consider the unique needs each person or pet may have in case you have to evacuate quickly. Update your kits and supplies based on recommendations by the Centers for Disease Control.

Week 3 September 12-18: Low-Cost, No-Cost Preparedness

Natural disasters don’t wait for a convenient time. Preparing for them shouldn’t wait either. Start today by signing up for alerts, safe-guarding important documents, and taking other low cost and no cost preparedness actions to lessen the impact of disasters and emergencies for you and your family.

Week 4 September 19-25: Teach Youth About Preparedness

Talk to your kids about preparing for emergencies and what to do in case you are separated. Reassure them by providing information about how they can get involved.

  • Listen to local news or NOAA Weather Radio for emergency updates. Watch for signs of a storm, like darkening skies, lightning flashes or increasing wind.
  • Postpone outdoor activities if thunderstorms are likely to occur. Many people struck by lightning are not in the area where rain is occurring.
  • If a severe thunderstorm warning is issued, take shelter in a substantial building or in a vehicle with the windows closed. Get out of mobile homes that can blow over in high winds.
  • If you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be in danger from lightning. If thunder roars, go indoors! The National Weather Service recommends staying inside for at least 30 minutes after the last thunder clap.
  • Avoid electrical equipment and telephones. Use battery-powered TVs and radios instead.
  • Shutter windows and close outside doors securely. Keep away from windows.
  • Do not take a bath, shower or use plumbing.
  • If you are driving, try to safely exit the roadway and park. Stay in the vehicle and turn on the emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends. Avoid touching metal or other surfaces that conduct electricity in and outside the vehicle.
  • If you are outside and cannot reach a safe building, avoid high ground; water; tall, isolated trees; and metal objects such as fences or bleachers. Picnic shelters, dugouts and sheds are NOT safe.

Shutting Down Mold After a Home Flood

Dealing With Mold After a Flood In Your Home

Mold growth is a pesky side effect of flooding. Even an inch of standing water in your home can trigger a chain reaction that leads to smelly, unsightly fungus. What can be done to minimize the formation of mold, or clean it up if it’s already there? Here are a few easy tips for dealing with mold after a flood in your Burton, OH, home.

Get Rid of the Water

Get started by removing as much water as you can. Good tools include:

  • mops
  • buckets
  • gloves

Use mops and buckets to remove or absorb as much water as possible. This method is best if you’re dealing with water that hasn’t been contaminated with human or animal waste. Such water is best removed by professionals.

Dry Everything Out

Mold spores thrive in warm, wet locales. This makes thoroughly drying your home very important. Open windows and use large fans to dry the area out quickly and thoroughly. For an extra punch, rent a dehumidifier and leave it on overnight.

Disinfect Everything

One of the biggest threats posed by standing water from a flood is bacteria. It’s a must that you disinfect everything it touched. Use a disinfectant to wipe down surfaces and kill any germs the flood water may have deposited. As an added benefit, wiping things down can help remove mold spores and discourage mold growth.

Dispose of Damaged Items

Unfortunately, flood damage can be devastating to porous materials like fabric. Evaluate the contents of your home and throw away anything that can’t be completely disinfected. This includes electronics, papers and other absorbent items.
Flood damage can be extensive to a home, but mold growth can make things even worse. For minor damage, use the above tips. And for major flood damage, find a water remediation company to get the type of water removal, drying and disinfecting you need to get your household back on its feet.

A Guide to Commercial Storm Insurance

Things You Need to Know About Commercial Storm Insurance

If you own property in Burton, OH, where hurricanes and windstorms cause significant damage, you may be wondering if insurance is available to covers any losses. Because of the increased development along coastal areas, there has been a rise in disastrous losses and massive flood cleanup efforts. Fortunately, insurance companies provide storm insurance. Here are some things you need to know about this type of insurance.

Hurricane Deductibles

Insurance coverage for hurricanes and windstorms is different from traditional insurance. Traditional insurance policies have a dollar deductible that has to be paid before any coverage begins. In contrast, a commercial property that has experienced flood damage would qualify for losses under a percentage deductible. Here are some basics about percentage deductibles:

The percentage that you’re required to pay is based on the value of your property. For example, a $500,000 property with a 2% deductible would necessitate that you pay $10,000 before any insurance coverage takes effect.
With regular policies, the deductible applies with each claim. In contrast, a deductible under storm insurance is calculated per season.

There are typically two types of storm damage: hurricane and windstorm. Under the insurance plan, the natural disaster brings what is called a trigger. This means that a hurricane deductible applies in the specific situation. The state or insurance company determines if the trigger is applicable. Factors such as storm intensity and timing are considered.

State Differences

Hurricane insurance varies by state, so it’s important to check with your insurance carrier about the specific coverage. For example, some states allow for a higher premium in order to have a traditional dollar deductible plan instead of a percentage deductible. Other states in high-risk coastal areas may not have this option.
Commercial storm insurance is available in many states in the United States. Among other things, this coverage can help with hiring professional storm cleanup experts to assist your company after a hurricane hits.

Flooded With Sewage Smells: What To Do When You Have a Sewer Backup

9/10/2019 (Permalink)

Someone washing a pan Don't pour grease or hot oil down the kitchen sink!

When flooding strikes your home in Middlefield, OH, it can do a lot of damage. This is especially true if the flooding includes sewage loss, such as a broken pipe, a toilet backup, or sewer overflow. Not only do you have to deal with the water, you have to deal with the unpleasant sewage and odors – and possibly mold growth – that come with the water.

Causes of Sewer Backups

Flooding from sewer backups can be caused by many things:

  • Tree roots
  • Backflow valve malfunction
  • Grease buildup from pouring grease down the drain
  • Improper disposal of paper products
  • Aging sewer systems
  • Combined pipelines
  • Sanitary main blockages

Dealing With Mold

Where there is flood water, there is the potential for mold growth. Mold can make your house smell musty. To prevent this growth, the water must be dealt with immediately by opening windows and bringing in humidifiers and fans. After professional clean up and restoration, you will want to check areas where mold is likely to grow, especially if you notice a musty smell in your home.

Combating Sewage Odors

When it comes to dealing with sewage, you should hire an expert because you are not only dealing with water but also bacteria. The affected areas need to be disinfected and deodorized. You will also need to look at your personal belongings, including rugs and curtains, to ensure that they are disinfected and deodorized properly.

Preventing Future Problems

Although you cannot control or fix every potential cause, you can do a few things to prevent another flood from sewer backups:

  • Trim tree roots periodically.
  • Test your backflow valve once a year.
  • Properly dispose of grease and paper products.

By using these preventative measures and acting quickly when a flood does occur, you can protect your home in Middlefield, OH, from mold growth and bacteria caused by flood water. When a flood does strike, contact an expert to help you effectively restore and deodorize your home.

How To Run Emergency Drills in the Office

8/21/2019 (Permalink)

An emergency action plan should include a map showing the evacuations routes and exits

If you own commercial property or manage a business in Chagrin Falls, OH, the safety of your employees should be top priority. That means putting together a comprehensive set of protocols for a wide variety of emergency situations, like a fire drill. What might such a plan include?

Developing the Plan

First of all, you need to know what you'll be doing during the drill. That means creating an emergency action plan. This plan should be easy to read and distributed throughout the office. It should include:

  • A map showing the established evacuation routes and exits.
  • Designated section coordinators and evacuation wardens.
  • The assigned roles of employees and their contact information.
  • A preferred method for reporting the emergency.
A location for regrouping after evacuation.

Putting It Into Action

In addition to a plan, you may need equipment for handling an emergency like a tornado or fire drill. Medical kits and emergency supplies, like blankets and flashlights, should be stored in a secure location and replaced as necessary. In order to increase the likelihood of a smooth execution, be sure to provide regular training to your employees in your emergency action plan and run drills. This will also get them familiar with your emergency alert system, which may consist of alarms and radio communication.

The Aftermath

Once your evacuation is complete, you will need a plan for accounting for employees. You may also need to know how to administer basic medical care. Rescue operations could be necessary if not everyone is accounted for. A copy of your insurance policy and their contact information will be necessary once all immediate needs are taken care of, you should also designate someone to be in charge of this. It is recommended to research and choose a damage remediation service.
Emergency preparation involves a lot more than just the occasional fire drill, although that is an important element. If you are prepared for the worst, you are likely to only experience the best!

3 Tips for Preventing Flood Damage

7/25/2019 (Permalink)

Your sump pump can be your biggest ally when flooding occurs

Flooding is the most frequent natural disaster in the United States. Even if your home in Highland Heights, OH, is covered by FEMA NFIP, you need to be prepared.

Here Are Three Ways To Prevent Flooding Damage

1. Take care of your sump pump. Your sump pump can be your biggest ally when flooding occurs, so it's important to keep it in good working order by performing regular maintenance:

  • Your pump may vibrate during use, so confirm that it's upright and hasn't tipped over or started leaning.
  • Clean both the sump pump and the pit regularly.
  • Test that the pump is working properly by dumping water into the pit. The pump should start up on its own and drain the water promptly.
  • Check that the discharge hose is carrying water sufficiently far away from the house.
  • Make sure the ground fault circuit interrupter is plugged in and that the cord is dry and in good shape.
  • Rid the check valve of debris. (Be sure to disconnect it first.)

If you live in a rural area, whether it's at high risk according to FEMA NFIP or not, you should also make sure that the pump isn't delivering water to your septic field. If it is, it could flood the drainage field.

2. Keep your most valuable items off the ground. Photo albums, home movies, yearbooks, personal records, and other important items should be stored on high shelves. Better still, make digital copies or hard copies of anything you'd have trouble replacing.

3. Avoid sewer backup. When flooding occurs, that water can overburden the sewer system, causing it to flow into your basement via your home's water line. Capping your basement's sewer openings — thinks toilets, showers, sinks, and floor drains — can stop this from happening.

If you're familiar with FEMA NFIP and know your home's flood risk, a few preventative measures can go a long way toward lessening flood damage to your home. For those messes that you can't avoid or that require a little extra manpower and expertise, it may be wise to enlist the help of water damage repair specialists.

Tax Breaks During Natural Disasters

5/2/2019 (Permalink)

FEMA maintains a website with more information about national emergency areas.

Tax Breaks

If your business in Bainbridge, OH was recently affected by storm damage, you may have recourse to a few different federal compensation methods. This financial recovery is usually available independently of your insurance status. Read on to discover if these benefits apply to you.

1. What Counts?

Most weather-related damage to your business is tax deductible. This means that the cost of repairs can be subtracted from the federal taxes that you owe. This is one of many ways the government offers assistance to get local businesses running again, which in turn leads to economic recovery. Note that simple accidents, wear and tear, forms of negligence do not apply. The damage must be the direct result of a hurricane, flood, earthquake, or similar event.

2. How to Process?

For businesses suffering storm damage, flood damage, or other types of disaster losses, nonitemizers can make claims. Be sure that you don't try to claim anything that has already been reimbursed by your insurer, as these items are not eligible for federal tax compensation. Be sure to keep all tax records, whether paper or electronic, in a safe place. Both your adjuster and any federal inspectors will need to review these documents in order to verify insurance and tax claims. FEMA maintains a website with more information about national emergency areas, which may be a source of additional aid.

3. Resolution

Since you have access to the funds you need to resolve the damage to your business, you can begin the flood cleanup process. Start as quickly as possible, since ongoing damage from water retention may become a further insurance liability in the future. Have the contact information of a qualified cleanup professional ready before severe weather strikes.

With proper record keeping and knowledge of a few tax code details, you can position your business to take advantage of federal resources and minimize storm damage disruption.

Home Restoration After Flooding

Home Restoration After Flooding

Take care of your most valuable investment—your home—by having a content cleaning plan. If storm-related flooding or pipe burst occurs in Mayfield, OH, you’ll be equipped to deal with any eventuality.

1. Whom to Call

The most important step in the event of a residential flood is the accurate assessment of the damage. Never enter a totally inundated basement, especially before the electrical systems have been shut off. Murky water with floating debris may be indicative of a high degree of contamination, especially if the body of water has come in contact with sewage or sewer lines. In these cases, it is best to contact a qualified water cleanup professional.

2. What to Do

Most cleanup services will begin by pumping water out of the affected area and ensuring that no continual leak remains. However, content cleaning involves more than just removing the obvious standing water. Many materials retain moisture and can harbor mold and bacterial growth. Porous materials and materials embedded deep in your home structures with poor air exposure may need to be torn out and replaced. Other non-porous materials can usually be dried provided that the room has sufficient airflow to clear the trapped water for good.

3. Other Considerations

Any substances that have come into contact with black water will likely need to be both dried and disinfected. Most professional services accomplish this with a combination of chemical and ultraviolet exposures to ensure that your belongings are decontaminated without damaging them. If drywall and insulation needs complete replacement, you might consider improving the plastic vapor barrier against the interior wall as well.

All in all, the most professional services can provide a content cleaning process at a reasonable cost with minimal disruption. Have the contact information of a cleanup company ready in case you or someone you know suffers any type of flooding event.

What to Do When Facing Storm Damage

4/4/2019 (Permalink)

Storm Damage can be devastating in Geauga County, OH.

When you are facing storm damage, it can wreak havoc on your home. You could find yourself facing the challenges of hurricane damage that results in wind damage, roof damage, flooding, and more. It can be overwhelming. When storm damage strikes, you know that you need to take care of all of the challenges that can be caused by a roof leak, ice damming, river flooding, or flooding. Regardless of what type of storm damage has struck, you need storm remediation services from a professional storm damage restoration company to get to the root of your problems so that they can perform home restoration services to get your home back on track.

Where to Begin After Storm Damage?

The first step is to bring in your professional storm damage restoration company once the storm is over and you are able to assess the damages to your home. Your professional home restoration company will identify the source of the damage, whether it is river flooding, flooding brought on by hurricane damage, wind damage, ice damming, hail damage, or frozen pipes. The list goes on concerning the damages that could occur to your home from flood water, ground water, an ice dam, and more. When storms strike at any time of year, they can put your home in serious need of storm restoration services. Once storm restoration workers have pinpointed all sources of damage, they can begin the storm restoration process.

What is the Next Step?

Professional storm restoration workers are going to clear out any debris left behind from the storm. They will also do what they can to salvage your belongings. They will remove any ground water or flood water that has been left behind. Water may be present after hail damage as well. A flood pump may be necessary to eliminate water so that the water restoration process can begin. The flood pump will suck out all water remaining in the building. You may even have a flood pump on the premises already if you are in a flood zone. Once the flood pump has removed ground water or flood water brought on by river flooding or flooding, they will begin the drying process involved with water restoration and home restoration. Everything must be thoroughly dried before any type of repairs can be performed. The same holds true when there is ice damage caused by ice damming. An ice dam can build up and cause a roof leak. This in turn can lead to a roof repair. Your storm restoration crew may need to cover the roof of your home until roof repair work is underway to deal with a roof leak caused by hurricane damage, wind damage, or ice damage. Once everything is dry, the next phase of work can begin.

Sanitization is Key

When a professional storm remediation. crew goes to work in your home, sanitization is a must as part of the water restoration process. River flooding or flooding of any type can inundate a home with ground water or flood water. Water damage can also occur from a roof leak when there is need for roof repair. Ice damming caused by an ice dam can also lead to water in the home and unsanitary conditions. The storm remediation. crew will address sanitization by using industrial-strength cleansers on all surfaces before continuing restoration work.

The Repair Process Can Begin

A professional storm remediation. team can begin the work of repairs, including roof repair after a roof leak or ice dam, once all debris is removed and the premises are sanitary. Storm remediation. services may include new dry wall, painting, new flooring, and construction of new walls. Home restoration is possible regardless of the extent of the damage. Preparing Your Business for Severe Thunderstorms

Severe thunderstorm should not be taken lightly

A rain storm is different from a severe thunderstorm in several ways: thunder, lightning and strong winds. It is advised to find shelter and stay indoors when severe weather strikes, but what else should a business be doing to protect its assets, employees and customers.

1. Keep Trees and Shrubs Trimmed

The exterior of your building can become extremely dangerous during high winds and severe weather, especially with unkempt trees and shrubs. While many plants and trees appear fine in normal weather conditions, long branches or otherwise innocuous bare limbs can become projectiles in certain instances. It is best to keep trees and shrubs trimmed to prevent any possible issues.

2. Have an Emergency Plan

A rain storm is mild enough to continue with your day-to-day operations, but a severe storm changes things. With lightning and strong wind gusts, it is best to stay indoors and preferably away from windows and doors. As a business owner, it is best to create an emergency plan for all employees. You should find a designated storm shelter within the building away from the exterior.

3. Know First Aid

In an emergency situation, it pays to have knowledgeable people present. For instance, it is wise to have employees who are aware of basic first aid practices, including CPR. This way, you ensure that there are people present who can safely apply aid while waiting for rescue if it comes to that.

4. Install Lightning Rods and Other Defensive Measures

Beyond planning and first aid, you can install lightning rods and generators to prevent damage to electrical systems. A disaster restoration specialist in the Chagrin Falls, OH , area can help you come up with a specific plan for your business and building.

While a rain storm may not cause the greatest concern, a severe thunderstorm should not be taken lightly. These storms can wreak havoc on electrical systems and may even cause physical harm to you or your employees. Know your options and plan ahead.

If you have frozen pipes, ice damming, wind damage, hurricane damage, or flooding at your home, you shouldn't wait for water restoration. Instead, you should seek out storm remediation.

Although you might be facing cold temperatures when dealing with an ice dam or roof damage, it's important that you seek assistance before you experience further roof damage. Unfortunately, some storm damage, wind damage, hurricane damage, ice damage, hail damage can be extreme. You could experience flooding in your home after river flooding in your area, but you may also notice flood water as the result of hurricane storm damage. River flooding and ground water in your home can lead to health risks, which is one of the reasons it's important to have a water restoration professional use a flood pump to remove that excess water from your home. River flooding can also lead to ground water and flood water outside of your home. For example, you may notice standing ground water and flood water in your yard as a result of the flood water in your area.

If you're facing a specific problem such as a roof leak, hail damage, or ice damage, it's important to understand that many of these problems can be prevented before you need a roof repair. Many homeowners simply don't have the resources to prevent damage to their home before they experience ice damming or a roof leak, but the right water restoration professional can guide you in taking preventative measures to care for your house.

Storm restoration might seem like an overwhelming concept, but the truth is that every home owner has to face storm restoration at some point. Although some problems, including those requiring a flood pump, can't always be prevented, you may be surprised to find that you're able to minimize future damage to your home, regardless of where you live.

The Process of Making a Flood Cut

9/12/2018 (Permalink)

Water damage in Chardon

Flooding often leads to water damage, and water damage often leads to the removal of affected items and structures. If your home in Chardon, OH, floods during a storm, mitigation experts may have to use a flood cut to determine how much of your wall to tear out. A flood cut is a mark that is made 12-18 inches above the perceivable water damage to a wall to mark the point to which the technicians need to remove the drywall. Here are the steps of using a flood cut.

1. Determine Necessity

A flood cut is not always necessary. If water damage is minimal or the water is clean, the wall probably doesn't need to be removed. When the flooding is the result of a storm, however, the contamination of the water seeps into the walls. It's best, therefore, to mark them with a flood cut and remove the walls, especially if they are saturated.

2. Prepare for Mess

Removing the drywall is usually a pretty messy process. You will probably see the professionals put a tarp down before they begin. It's also advisable for them to wear gloves and protective clothing, especially if they will be removing damp insulation that's behind the wall.

3. Remove Wall

Once there is a tarp down to catch the falling drywall, the demolition process can begin. Technicians start at the flood cut and remove everything below it, ensuring that all the water damage is gone.

4. Clean the Mess

The wall that they tear out has to go somewhere. Another benefit of using the tarp is that it makes for easy cleanup. They can just gather the edges to contain the mess and head to the dumpster.

5. Replace Wall

Many mitigation professionals are also restoration experts. They can put new insulation and a new wall back up and blend the paint so that it looks like nothing ever happened.

If you have flooding in your home, you may need a flood cut to mark the spot where the wall gets removed. Understanding the steps of the process can help you know what's going on when the professionals arrive.

Air mover on a flood damage in Chagrin Falls, OH office

If your business or commercial property in Chagrin Falls, OH sustains damage from a storm, you may be curious what the storm restoration process entails. This brief overview of the five major stages of cleanup, from assessment to determining what to tear out to cleaning and drying, explains how these experts may approach and attempt to resolve the damage in your building.

Five stages of cleanup

  1. Assess damage and provide boarding and tarp up services: The service should start the restoration process by determining the types of primary damage and taking steps to prevent secondary damage.
  2. Remove water: A restoration service should remove all standing water as soon as possible.
  3. Tear out damaged building materials and remove contents: Damaged materials and contents should be removed and disposed of prior to cleaning. Depending on the nature of these materials, they should be replaced only after the affected area is completely dry.
  4. Clean and disinfect: The area affected by storm damage should be thoroughly cleaned and disinfected.
  5. Dry and add final touches: The restoration process should conclude with thorough drying. Most services rely on dehumidifiers to speed up the drying process and prevent mold growth. The final stages of restoration should only take place after the affected area is dry.

A certified restoration company will follow these general steps in most instances of storm damage. Keep in mind that every instance of storm or water damage is different. Depending on the situation and priorities necessary to prevent secondary damage, experts may approach this process in a slightly different order or recommend other restoration measures.

The service you hire should carefully examine the extent of the damage in your property before determining which materials or contents to tear out or attempt to restore. Regardless, these major steps should give property owners a better sense of what to expect during the storm restoration process.

3 Best Tips for Water Damage Cleanup

2/16/2018 (Permalink)

Excessive water in your home from a flood or broken pipe can damage valuable possessions and pose a health risk. If your house isn’t cleaned in a timely manner, mildew or mold will develop. In most cases, you’ll need to hire a professional restoration and dry cleaning service in Bainbridge, OH. In the meantime, there are steps you can take to protect your valuables.

1. Circulate Air

Mold and mildew thrive in high humidity environments. Water in your home from floods or broken pipes makes your residence more humid. Increase the circulation of cool air with the following items:

• Dehumidifiers
• Air conditioner
• Open windows
• Fans

As an added precaution, open the shades, curtains or blinds. This exposes your house to considerable sunlight, which can help reduce mildew and mold.

2. Air Dry Objects

Avoid placing wet objects outdoors in direct heat or sunlight. This will cause them to buckle, warp and split. Instead, let the items air dry indoors. Do you have possessions that must be carried in plastic bags or containers? If so, leave both open so your valuables can dry naturally.

3. Rinse Items

Floods create problems in addition to water damage. Flood waters also leave behind silt or mud. This debris can cake up or leave heavy deposits on objects such as metal items. Quickly rinse objects off with clean water. You may also use a fine hose spray. Wipe the surface with a damp cloth or soft brush. This helps prevent any scratching. Always wear rubber or plastic gloves for your protection.

A broken pipe or a flood in Bainbridge, OH, can bring unwanted water in your home, which can damage everything from clothing and walls to furniture and carpet. This requires an extensive cleanup. Of course, you’ll need a dry cleaning, repair and restoration service for handling major recovery issues. However, until the professionals arrive, you can salvage your most precious possessions by following the tips above.

Handling a Flooded Property Correctly

Flood damage is one of the worst things that can befall a property. Many people incorrectly assume that because they don't live in a flood plain or an area prone to extreme whether that they are safe from the risk of flooding.

Any time a property owner notices water in their home or water in their business, it is absolutely imperative to call in a professional restoration company to immediately begin taking measures towards the restoration of the flooded home or business and the mitigation of water damage. With timely restoration and mitigation efforts, almost all flood damage is completely reversible. But even after the first 24 hours after water in a business or water in a home appears, the chances of a successful restoration or mitigation of the water damage begin to drop precipitously. After one week without property intervention in the flooded home or business, the chances of the property incurring massive, permanent water damage is all but assured. In the worst cases, this often involves the total write-off of the property.

But with timely action, the restoration company can almost ensure the water cleanup will be a success. In this article, we'll take a brief look at the process that a professional restoration company uses to carry out the water cleanup process. It's important to remember that the single most important step in successfully saving and restoring a flooded home or business is for the property owner to call in a professional restoration company. Without that crucial step, none of the other steps can even begin.

The call is made and the water cleanup team arrives at the property

Once the call to the water cleanup company is made, the team should arrive on site within a few minutes. Once there, they will immediately begin surveying the extent and severity of the water in the business or water in the home. They will go to the source of the pipe break or supply line break, cutting off any active leaks and seeing the extent of possible seepage. Using sophisticated tools, such as hygrometers and infrared detectors, the team will carefully inspect the area around the original supply line break or pipe break, getting a feel for the extent to which water may have seeped into out-of-site places.

The team will begin removing water from the flooded home or business

The next step will be to begin the removal of any standing water in the home or water in the business. This will be carried out using heavy-duty vacuum equipment that is capable of removing thousands of gallons of standing water each hour. The water removal portion of the cleanup process generally only takes a few minutes to an hour.

The drying step is initiated

Next, the team will begin drying the premises. They will take extra care to ensure that all moisture is removed from the area of the original supply line break or pipe break. The drying step may take the longest of any of them. Drying typically lasts one hour to a full day.

Afterwards, all furniture and surfaces will be scrubbed to ensure no mildew is allowed to form. At this point, the property will be restored to its prior condition.

Dealing With a Water Loss Damage Problem in Chagrin Falls, OH

3/24/2017 (Permalink)

Around Chagrin Falls, OH and other Ohio communities close by such as Bainbridge and Chardon, the prospect of water damage and flood damage are not lost on the residents. The Chagrin River flowed vigorously in 2015 and caused flooding in the Chagrin Falls area to the point where residents had to scramble.

The Chagrin River has been rechanneled and dredged to the point that is has become unstable for surrounding towns when torrential rains come off of Lake Erie and into the Chagrin Falls, Chardon, and Bainbridge OH areas.

Many floods that occur don't necessarily sweep away the house or the business, but they leave enough water inside the structure that the occupants need to leave until things get cleaned up. The water damage and flood damage can leave standing water in a structure that is dangerous in several ways. First of all, if water is in a basement to any degree of depth, it might not be known if the water is covering an electrical outlet that could be "hot" and possibly electrocute anyone touching the water.

Standing water in home or water in business situations can carry all kinds of contaminants such as raw sewage, mold, bacteria, fertilizers, pesticides, and petroleum products. Just breathing the fumes from raw sewage can make many people ill.

In most cases, if there is lots of damage and standing water, most people will leave the premises until things get cleaned up. The optimal course of action is to have a professional hazmat team come in and mitigate all of the damage, clean things up, and rebuild the necessary portions of the structure that need repair. The water cleanup is the first stage of restoration after a flood.

The Steps of Restoring a Home or Business After a Flood

The first thing that must be done is to remove any standing water from withing a home. The most efficient way to do this is with high-speed pumps, if available. If not, as in some floods some equipment is not always available, siphoning with a hose will work, but it will just take longer. A floor squeegee is also useful for the last remnants of water which can be squeegeed out the door. Caution is advised to wear protective clothing, boots, gloves and a mask to protect against caustic contents of the water as well as mold and bacteria.

These are very good reasons not to touch any flood water at all if at all possible, or unless protective clothing is being worn. It is also a good reason for the homeowner or business owner not to attempt flood cleanup procedures on their own. When there are water in home or water in business situations, the proper course to take would be to let the hazmat experts do the job if at all possible.

Mold

Mold needs a moist place to grow that is dark and has no moving air. Ideal places for its growth are closets, attics, basements, crawl spaces and behind walls where it is dark. Mold grows from tiny, microscopic spores that float through the air and if they land in an ideal place, they grow.

Mold can grow very fast. Just a small patch the size of a thumbnail can grow to cover an entire wall in the matter of a few days.

The Rest of the Story
After the water cleanup, the area has to go through a drying process. This is best accomplished with a few large industrial fans which are used to create air movement over the affected area. This air movement process will cause the drying effect on the items in the room such as walls, floors, furniture and other items. This process can take a few days to a week.

The rest of the mitigation involves the throwing out of any soakable items such as overstuffed furniture such as couches and easy chairs, things like pillows, carpeting, padding, pictures, paper items, drapes and curtains, and other similar items. The bacteria and mold in these things are impossible to get rid of and would just cause huge contamination problems later.

The bacteria and mold in these things are impossible to get rid of and would just cause huge contamination problems later.

Once everything that is contaminated is out of the building, time can be spent in cleaning and sterilizing the area as much as possible. Products such as a Clorox solution is best used as it is a germ killer. It will keep the bacteria from growing again later.

Once the area is clean, then the mitigation takes on a new direction as the area can be rebuilt, repainted and re-appointed. New flooring, carpeting, drywall, draperies, painting, and reconstruction can take place. In many instances, the area will be better than before because all items will be new or next to new.

Cost Assistance
Most areas in America do not have flood insurance available, although it is available through the Federal Government. Obviously, a flood where an entire house can be ruined can be a financially devastating situation. In the Ohio area near the Chagrin River, there has been formed a quasi-government coalition that has been put together to assist flood victims. The essence of the group is to provide financial help to flood victims and also the ability to repay costs of cleanup and repair over time.

People can apply for flood insurance through individual insurance agents, as it cannot be purchased directly through the Federal Government. Ask your insurance agent how to get it, and if he or she cannot sell it to you, you can ask around and find someone who can. If you live in a flood plain area, it would be wise to look into its purchase.
