Why you should call SERVPRO of Geauga County should you see signs of MOLD?

6/10/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO filter Our HEPA filter air scrubbers removes 99.97% of all airborne molecules and is perfect for mold remediation.

Outdoor mold spores begin to increase as the temperatures rise in the spring/early summer when the weather is warm and moist.

Molds are microscopic fungi that produce spores, which spread through the air and can trigger or aggravate asthma symptoms. Unlike pollen which you can see everywhere, you might not notice that mold spores floating through the air.  Inside, mold levels will increase due to moisture in the air and from leaks and standing water.

To Reduce Mold in Your Home or Business:

Increase air flow in your home. Open doors between rooms, move furniture away from walls and use fans if needed. Repair roof leaks and roof gutters. Clean out your gutters to remove leaves and debris.

One of the simplest things you can do is opening windows to help reduce mold. Doing so lets excess moisture flow outside instead of settling on your walls, floors, and ceiling. Without the proper amount of moisture indoors, mold won't be able to grow.

Every mold damage scenario is different and requires a unique solution, but the general mold remediation process stays the same.  Our mold remediation process is:

  1. Emergency Contact - (440) 564-7266
  2. Inspection and Mold Damage Assessment
  3. Mold Containment
  4. Air Filtration
  5. Removing Mold and Mold-Infested Materials
  6. Cleaning Contents and Belongings

SERVPRO of Geauga County is dedicated to responding immediately when you contact us. A fast response lessens the damage, limits further damage, and reduces cost.

Our advanced equipment helps to detect and stop the source of water feeding the mold. We then isolate the affected area using a negative air pressure chamber.

What is Mold?

9/22/2020 (Permalink)

Mold growth This is mold growth found on the base of a vanity wall.

What is Mold:

Mold is a fungi that requires two components to grow and survive.

  • Indoor environment – wallpaper, drywall, paint, wood, fabrics, paper, and some carpets.
  • Moisture – molds cannot grow without moisture.

When mold feeds on a food source it produces a byproduct of digestion, creating that musty / moldy odor we smell. Mold is microscopic until a large enough mass is created. If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Geauga County for mold remediation services.

About Our Mold Remediation Services

SERVPRO of Geauga County specializes in mold cleanup and restoration, in fact, it is a cornerstone of our business.  Our crews are highly trained restoration professionals that use specialized equipment and techniques to properly remediate your mold problem quickly and safely.

Neighbors Magazine - Michael Bowdren Feature

Magazine Article Michael Bowdren Cleans Up Geauga County

Recently Michael was the cover story for a local magazine article, here is a portion:

The concerns over the coronavirus are affecting the whole family, as they are the rest of the country. As an owner of a SERVPRO franchise, Mike is on the frontlines trying to keep his customers safe. As soon as news of the virus spreading hit, Mike and other SERVPRO franchises began receiving phone calls about proactive disinfecting of structures due to the virus. “We are figuring out the best options for our clients. SERVPRO has structured its cleaning protocols into three categories depending on the level of exposure that has occurred at a site,” he explains. Category One is proactive cleaning and disinfecting surfaces when no cases are suspected or reported in a structure; Category Two is for when there has been a suspected case in the structure; Category Three is a result of a confirmed coronavirus case within the structure. The tough thing is that while many of us are staying home riding out this situation, SERVPRO and its employees are hard at work. “I am reminding our employees that we are working when others aren’t. We are working when people are sleeping and when people have suffered catastrophes in their businesses and homes with hurricanes, flooding, and now the coronavirus.” As with all of us, the virus isn’t just affecting our work lives. It is affecting our families, and the same is true of Mike and his girls. Mike and the girls look forward to things getting back to normal. In the meantime, Mike says, “We just want to reach out to everyone in our neighborhood and hope that everyone is staying well and practicing what they are supposed to in order to stay safe.”

3 Types of Damage You Can Expect in Your Business After a Fire

3 Types of Damage You Can Expect in Your Business After a Fire

If your Bainbridge, OH, business experiences a fire, it’s highly recommended to contact a local fire damage restoration service. This is because a restoration service has the ability to deal with the various types of damage that come with a fire, including smoke cleaning and property restoration. Here are the three most common types of damage you may see.

1. Structural

Structural damage is probably the first problem many people think of after a fire. Not only can the flames eat through the building materials, such as wood or drywall, but the heat can weaken metal materials. In many cases a restoration service may have to replace these materials. Areas like these may be covered over until the repairs can be completed.

2. Odor

Another form of damage you may see a restoration crew address is smoke odor. Smoke cleaning typically involves the use of an ozone machine to help remove lingering odor from the air, as well as special cleaners to remove unpleasant smoke scents from office furniture and equipment. If the majority of the damage is odor-related, you may still be able to go through daily operations in the area.

3. Smoke

Fire is not the only harming element of a fire. Smoke damage can cause a number of problems, from interfering with electronics to leaving behind obnoxious odor. Fortunately, a restoration service can remove smoke damage from the structure, as well as any damaged items. This process may involve the use of special cleaners, and may depend on the item type. A professional should be asked to clean any affected electronics.
Whether your business needs structural reinforcement, odor removal or smoke cleaning, a local restoration service can help. These professionals can have your business property restored so that it looks like the fire never occurred. If you have any questions, a professional should be able to help.

3 Steps That Can Help Prevent Mold

How to Protect Yourself Against Future House Mold

Mold is a fungus that has its place in nature but can be a nightmare in the home. If you suspect a mold problem, you should consider conducting a mold inspection. If, however, you haven’t found any noticeable spores, you can protect yourself against future house mold by following these three steps.

1. Identify Potential Problem Areas

Mold develops and grows in damp places. Examine areas where there might be water leaks or flooding, such as attics and basements. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, garages, and walls that make contact with earth also provide a breeding ground for different types of mold, including black mold. Hidden mold can form inside walls, under carpets, and in areas that might not be visible. A mold inspection team might be needed to find some molds.

2. Keep Wet Areas Dry

Mold can start forming in 24 to 48 hours in a wet area. It can form on both hard and pulpy surfaces, such as clothing, carpet, dry wall, tiles, furniture, and wood paneling. Flood water, spills, and leaks should be cleaned and dried immediately. Items that can’t be dried should be removed from the area. Wet items should not be left lying around, and clothes should not be left in the washing machine. Remember, mold thrives on moisture.

3. Ensure Proper Ventilation

When doing laundry, washing dishes, taking a shower, or cooking, ensure your room has good ventilation by simply opening a window or two. Good air flow through your house can help prevent moisture from building up around doors, windows, and on walls. Fresh air can help reduce moisture. It’s recommended to keep room humidity below 60 percent to avoid condensation building up on windows, walls, and pipes.

You can’t completely mold-proof your home in Gates Mills, OH. That’s why it’s a good idea to have a professional mold remediation team perform a mold inspection regularly and after any major water leak or flooding.

How To Prevent Mold Growth in Your Rental Property

7/25/2019 (Permalink)

Three Simple Mold Prevention Tips

The presence of indoor mold within a rental property can create a hassle for property owners and tenants as well as cause significant structural damage to the building. Here are three simple mold prevention tips to help keep your rental home safely mold-free.

1. Turn Off the Water

Water damage is one of the leading causes of mold growth. Sometimes leaks can be difficult to detect, especially if the leaking pipes are concealed behind walls or ceilings. Look for unexpected increases in the water bill. Also check for stains or signs of warping on walls, floors and ceilings, and watch for corrosion on the pipes themselves. If you or your tenants find any evidence of leaking pipes or interior flooding, turn off the water supply immediately. Call a plumber and a water remediation expert to properly address the situation.

2. Keep the Heat On

If you are looking to save money on winter heating costs, consider lowering your heat rather than turning it off completely. Cold temperatures increase the risk of frozen pipes and ice dams. Freezing pipes can crack or burst, leading to leaks that foster the development of mold. Similarly, ice dams that do not properly drain when melting may back up into the ceiling, walls and insulation.

3. Maintain Low Humidity

Although mold prevention must still be taken into consideration during winter, summertime humidity is often a larger concern when it comes to mold growth. Consistent humidity and dampness in the air may provide enough moisture to cause mold. For the best air quality, indoor relative humidity should be kept below 50%. Consider using a dehumidifier to provide additional climate control within your rental home, as air conditioning units alone typically do not lower humidity enough to prevent mold.

Mold prevention is an important part of maintaining a rental property in Burton, OH. Whether you are seeking restoration in the aftermath of water damage or are in need of cleanup services for a current mold problem, mold remediation and water damage restoration specialists are available to provide round-the-clock assistance.

3 Steps To Take if You Suspect Mold Damage in Your Home

Steps to Take if You Need Mold Assessment

Finding mold in your home in Gates Mills, OH, can be frightening. It’s probably not a situation that you’ve prepared for, so you may not know what to do next. Here are the steps you should take if you believe you need a mold assessment done.

1. Call a Professional

Never try to fix the problem yourself. Call mold remediation experts to come and do an assessment for you. They should be able to tell you if it’s mildew or mold. If it’s the latter, they can analyze it so that you know the type of spore it is. These specialists can guide you through the next steps, which may include the cleanup process and repairs.

2. Remove the Mold

You will most likely not be able to stay in your home during this time, especially if you have black mold. An infestation will have to be removed from all infected surfaces. If the spores are in the drywall, this can be a difficult process. You may find that some of your belongings have fungus growth as well. The professionals can take care of cleaning these up too.

3. Stop the Source

After the initial mold assessment, the remediation experts will determine what is causing the problem. If the source of the mold is not fixed, the issue will most likely return. If possible, the professionals might repair the cause during the remediation process. Spores grow due to moisture, so you may discover that you have a leaking pipe in the wall that needs fixing. Always make sure you have proper ventilation in your home, and never leave damp clothes sitting out for long periods of time. Both of these can lead to mold growth.

If you believe there is fungus in your home, it is important to call for help right away. Never try to perform a mold assessment yourself; leave it to the remediation experts.

Understanding the Difference Between Mold and Mildew

3/4/2019 (Permalink)

Call our experts at SERVPRO for your mold damage.

A musty smell in your home in Chardon, OH, signals that you have a fungus problem. How big of a problem often depends on whether the odor comes from mildew or mold. Both can grow just about anywhere there is moisture, warmth and organic matter to feed on. They often grow in unsightly patches. There's a difference, however, between a mildew problem and mold damage.

Mildew

Milder is the milder fungus of the two. Although you certainly wouldn't welcome it in your home, it is the easier one to clean. There are several signs that the problem you have is mildew growth:

  • Moist environment
  • Surface infestation
  • Gray or white patches

Mildew can be cleaned with a mild household cleaner and a stiff brush. Simply scrub the patches away, and you can reasonably expect that they will not return.

Mold

There are many different types of mold, and they take on different appearances. If the growth is green or black, or if it has a fuzzy texture, you are dealing with mold and not mildew. Mold may also be slimy, whereas mildew is not.

Mold damage is also more invasive. If the surface where it lands is porous, it will grow down into the structure, making it very difficult to remove. When this occurs, you will probably need to hire mold cleanup experts to take care of the problem, especially if it appears on your walls, floors or ceiling. This is not an issue that can remedied with a simple swipe with a soapy cloth. Unless you remove all the mold growth, it will come back.

If you know you have a fungus problem but don't know if it's mildew or mold damage, you can always have it tested. Knowing a few key signs of each, however, can help you decide how the cleanup process should proceed and whom to call for help.

Insurance Claims and Disaster Response

2/19/2019 (Permalink)

As a leader in the restoration industry, SERVPRO offers some of the most accurate estimations and assessments.

Insurance Claims And Disaster Response

While a call to your insurer is likely the first thing that you should do after a disaster, it can be hard to focus immediately following a traumatic event. Your insurer will send out an adjuster to your property to help you understand claim services and to issue proof of loss forms. You can handle this process alone, but disaster restoration companies have experience with not only restoration work but also the insurance procedures surrounding it.

1. Protecting Your Claim

One of the first and best things an emergency response team does is mitigation work. This is typically referred to as the tarping over or boarding up of your home. The reason that this is so important to the claims process is that it prevents rejections from your insurer. An insurance provider is less likely to approve a claim when the client doesn’t take the necessary action to protect their property from further damage.

2. Clearing the Way for Proof of Loss

Another requirement of claim services is an accurate and all-encompassing proof of loss statement. While it is possible for these statements to be adjusted later, any adjustments prolong approval times and push off the restoration process. To help ensure you have an accurate statement, disaster restoration companies thoroughly clean out your facility, making sure that damage is visible.

3. Performing the Restoration

Insurance claims are based on accurate estimates of restoration work, and as a leader in the restoration industry, SERVPRO offers some of the most accurate estimations and assessments. You can even find a database of claims made for the Mayfield, OH area. Accuracy is everything for insurers because it means that they can better serve you, their client.

While insurance claim services can be confusing and overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be. Restoration companies can offer valuable insight into the process and will help you throughout while simultaneously trying to keep costs down.

4 Ways To Reduce Mold Spores

11/30/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial Mold Remediation in Middlefield,OH

How to Reduce Mold Spores

Every building contains mold spores. The presence of spores is not a problem, but it can quickly become one if the environment is conducive to mold growth. From air filtration to carpet cleaning, there are four ways to lower the number of spores present in a commercial structure and prevent colonies from forming.

1. Keep the Premises Clean

Thoroughly cleaning the interior of a commercial structure can eliminate many spores. Regularly dust surfaces and use HEPA-certified vacuums. It is also a good idea to lay out mats by the door to prevent dirt and spores from getting tracked inside. Have carpets and upholstery professionally cleaned several times a year.

2. Change Filters and Clean Air Ducts

Change HVAC filters on a regular basis and consider using HEPA-certified replacement filters. Other than carpet cleaning, this is one of the best ways to stop spores from circulating through a structure. Mold may also form in the HVAC system, particularly in moist components such as condensate drip pans, AC coils, and in ductwork. Schedule an air duct cleaning if you notice a moldy odor or any indication of mold problems.

3. Run a HEPA Filtration System

A HEPA air filtration system can also eliminate spores in an office space. Mold spores range from one micron all the way up to 100 microns in size. Look for a filter rated for mold and regularly clean or replace filtration components.

4. Take Out the Trash

Encourage employees to discard food packaging into receptacles that are emptied on a regular basis. It is also a good idea to avoid leaving coffee cups around an office.

Carpet cleaning, air filtration, and proper disposal can reduce spore levels in a building and prevent mold problems. Regular upkeep is necessary to stop spore buildup. If you think mold may be growing, call a commercial mitigation service in Middlefield, OH.

How To Maintain Your Sprinkler System

11/21/2018 (Permalink)

Remember to check sprinklers for damage to avoid flooding in your Chagrin Falls,OH business

The fire sprinkler system is the primary deterrent for extensive damage and loss of life if a blaze breaks out in your commercial building. Annual inspections on your building in Chagrin Falls, OH, must be completed by a professional to remain up to code, but you still need to keep an eye on your system throughout the year to identify necessary maintenance issues. The following checklists can help ensure that your system stays working all year long.

Monthly Checks

Every month, you should check your system's gauges and valves. This helps you identify leaks and make sure the system can properly detect dangerous changes in temperature. Your valves should meet certain criteria:

  • All fully open or closed (depending on system)
  • Free of leaks and visible damage
  • Accessible
  • Properly labeled

If your valves are leaking, you should call not only the company that installed the sprinklers for maintenance but also a water damage remediation company to take care of the fire sprinkler cleanup. Gauges should also be in good condition and showing the right water pressure for your system.

Quarterly Checks

Every three months, you should perform additional checks on your fire sprinkler. It is a good idea to dry test your fire suppression system once a quarter to ensure that it is ready to spring into action if the sensors go off. Check for visible damage to every working part of the system. It should be maintaining adequate pressure. Make sure the alarm sends the correct message when activated. If anything looks wrong or out of place, contact the company that installed the system for maintenance.

A reliable fire sprinkler system is essential for keeping your employees safe in the event of a fire. By sticking to a regular maintenance schedule that includes annual inspections as well as monthly and quarterly inspections, you can rest assured that your system will work when you need it to.

Top 5 Nor’easter Facts

Home flooded by storm in Bainbrigde, OH

Nor’easter Facts

Nor'easters are powerful storm systems that affect the northeastern coast of the United States. Even if nor'easters aren't a regular occurrence in Bainbridge, OH, knowing what a nor'easter is can be helpful when it comes to preparing for severe weather. Find out what to expect from this list of the top five nor'easter facts.

  1. Nor'easters do not start in the Northeast: Nor'easters get their name from the direction they travel. These weather systems are formed by the interaction between the polar jet stream traveling south and warm air moving north, as well as the Gulf Stream current warming water and air along the eastern coast of the United States.

  2. Nor'easters can form any time of year: You may think of nor'easters as winter storms, but this is not always the case. These weather systems tend to form between September and April, but the climatological factors that cause them are always in play.
  3. There are two types of nor'easters: A classic nor'easter is a storm that travels northeastward off the Atlantic Ocean. These weather systems are classified as Miller Type-A, named after J.E. Miller, who began classifying them in 1946. Miller Type-B storms start in the Midwest and travel east toward the Appalachian Mountains before reforming on the east coast.

  4. Nor'easters can cause flooding: Nor'easters can lead to heavy snow or rain, high tides, and storm surges. The conditions vary depending on the time of year.
  5. Nor'easters may intensify hurricanes: Meteorologists suggest that this type of storm was the source of a warm air mass that pushed Hurricane Sandy back toward land. In this case, the storm amplified the force of the hurricane and caused a superstorm.

Nor'easters can cause major damage across the eastern seaboard of the United States. If a nor'easter results in damage to your home, schedule a consultation with a residential storm mitigation and restoration service.
